Download PDFAbstract
Although fintech is an emerging sector in Afghanistan, it aims to address the substantial gap in financial access by removing time and location barriers and offering faster, safer, more affordable, and inclusive financial services. This paper provides strategic insights into the deployment of fintech in Afghanistan using two key analytical frameworks: pestle analysis and Porter’s Five Forces. In this study, we adopt a descriptive qualitative approach using secondary (public) data on recent fintech developments in Afghanistan. By synthesizing Pestle and Porter's Five Forces, this article aims to identify and describe potential opportunities and threats in the external environment and analyze the competitive landscape of the fintech sector in Afghanistan. Our key findings in the pestle analysis indicate that political instability, widespread poverty, gender gap, and public trust and reliance on the informal hawala system have constrained the macro environment for the fintech sector in Afghanistan. While the government’s move towards digital payments and revenue collection, the need for international organizations, and the high rate of unbanked and young population create potential opportunities in the Afghan fintech sector. In Porter's Five Forces analysis, the fintech sector in Afghanistan operates in an oligopoly market; the bargaining power of suppliers is very high, the bargaining power of individual buyers is low, but international organizations and UN agencies have high bargaining power, and the biggest threat to the fintech sector as a substitute product is the informal hawala channel. And finally, the key to fintech success in Afghanistan relies on aligning services for the less educated but needy social structure of the country.
